The Recycling Diet - Week 2 (metal)

After the first week of recycling nothing, during week 2 we get to focus on what to do with all of the metals that come into our hands.

First and foremost, the only metals that go into your single stream recycling are:

  • clean/dry/empty

  • and shaped like a can.

Cheatsheet for Curbside Recycling of Metals - don’t focus on all the things you can’t recycle or aren’t sure about. Focus on metal cans for effective recycling!

When it comes to recycling, focus FIRST on the accepted materials. In this case, it is easy- is it a can? Beverage cans, metal beverage bottles, steel food and soup cans, tuna and canned meat cans. If the answer is yes, continue to #2.

#2 Accepted Cans:

  • Is it empty? (Nobody wants your old tuna or dog food.) If not empty, you can toss in the trash or you can empty it out.

  • Is it clean? And dry-ish? ( tips: I use an old toothbrush to clean under the sharp top lip and I cheat and put the steel cans in the dishwasher!)

    • LABELS You can leave the labels on. (or remove them for A++)

    • LIDS

    • if lid is still partially attached, push the lid as far as safely possible into the can and recycle as normal

    • if lid is detached, those lids can be recycled at specialized scrap metal recycling or they can go into your trash can.

OMG yall, I realized that I never finished these show notes that said I’d post! I apologize for the delay but tbh I am struggling to do computer things right now. (For good reason! I am loving my newish job but it is taking a lot of my mental and physical energy right now.)

So I will be back to finish these notes, but it isn’t gonna be today… because today we are back on air for the next episode of Green Assistant Radio at 11am on AshevilleFM.org - Week 3 of The Recycling Diet - PAPER recycling.
